European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
